Daylight, a skylineand a programme going out.

Nothing here is staged for visitors. The set is rigged, the lights are up and the cameras are live because the room is in use.

Which is why the workflow matters more than any single box in it — and why you should test yours before you buy it.

Come and see it

Reading about it settles nothing.

Tell us what you are deciding and the room is configured before you arrive.

Why this room exists

The workflow is the product. The switcher is a component.

Nothing here can be fixed later, and that single constraint decides everything else about the room.

A live gallery is the only part of this building where a mistake is permanent. That constraint is exactly what makes it useful as a test: any weakness in a workflow — one operator too few, a monitor that lies, a source with no ISO behind it — surfaces inside twenty minutes and cannot be argued away afterwards.

It is also why two complete galleries sit here rather than one good one. A vendor comparison run at two different times, in two different rooms, on two different sets of sources is not a comparison. Run both desks off the same cameras and the same running order and the argument resolves itself, usually in a direction nobody predicted.

Why it is laid out this way

Four decisions, and what each one rejected

A room can be arranged to demonstrate or to decide. These are the choices that make this one the second, with the alternative named rather than left out of the story.

Two full galleries, one set of sources

one gallery and a slide about the other

A hybrid Vizrt chain on one desk and a complete Blackmagic ATEM chain on the other, both cutting the same programme. It is the only honest way to hold two systems against each other.
ISO record on everything

programme record only

Post keeps its options and a failed take becomes a re-edit rather than a re-shoot. It also means the session can be reviewed afterwards, which is where most of the learning actually happens.
Scopes on the desk

a scope somebody checks at the start

Levels get watched when they are in front of the person cutting. Put the SmartScope where the vision mixer can see it and legalisation stops being a problem for post.
PTZ heads on a keyboard

PTZ control buried in a menu

One operator running four cameras is only possible if the control is physical. Whether that works for your show is a twenty-minute question, not a specification question.

How this room works

Built to be argued with

Two galleries, one set of cameras

A hybrid Vizrt chain on one desk and a complete Blackmagic ATEM ecosystem on the other, both fed from the same sources. The argument between SDI and IP, or between two vendors, stops being theoretical the moment both are cutting the same programme.

Run it yourself

Bring a running order. The room is loaded before you arrive so the session starts with your hands on the panel rather than with a setup, and within twenty minutes you know whether one operator can hold the show you are being asked to deliver.

The failure you have to see

We pull a source mid-programme. A gallery that only ever demonstrates the happy path tells you nothing about the night it matters.

Why it has to be in person

What a page cannot show you

Every claim on this page could be made about any gallery. What cannot be written down is how a room feels at T-minus-two with a thirty-second running order, whether your operator can hold it, and what happens to their face when a source disappears. We pull one on purpose. That moment is the reason the room exists.

What you leave with

  1. A defensible answer on SDI against IP for your show, reached by cutting on both.
  2. Whether the programme you have been asked to deliver needs one operator or three.
  3. Having seen a source fail mid-programme, and watched the recovery.
  4. Your own running order, run — not a demonstration reel.
