Guitars and backline on the MCX stage
The backline

Volume is not a detail. It is the whole point.

An amplifier that sounds wonderful at conversation level can fall apart at stage level. The reverse is just as common.

Come and see it

Reading about it settles nothing.

Tell us what you are deciding and the room is configured before you arrive.

Why this room exists

Tone is settled in a room at volume, or it is not settled

You either heard it or you did not. Nobody has ever been argued into a tone.

Guitar equipment is the most heavily reviewed and least reliably chosen category in this building. The reason is simple: everything that matters happens at playing volume, in a real room, through a particular instrument — and none of those three survive a video.

The stage exists to restore all three at once. Amplification at working level, modelling switchable against the amps it is modelling, and your own guitar in the chain, because a pedal that transforms one instrument can do nothing at all for another.

Why it is laid out this way

Four decisions, and what each one rejected

A room can be arranged to demonstrate or to decide. These are the choices that make this one the second, with the alternative named rather than left out of the story.

At working volume

at a level that will not disturb anyone

Amplifiers, speakers and pedals all behave differently when they are loud. A quiet test is not a smaller version of a loud one; it is a different test with a different answer.
Modelling beside the amp it models

modelling assessed on its own

Switchable in seconds against the real thing. Held apart, both sound convincing. Held together is where you find out what you actually think.
Bring your own guitar

playing the house instrument

The instrument is half the equation. Judging a rig through somebody else's guitar answers a question you did not ask.
A deep board, wired and powered

pedals in boxes on a wall

Order, power and the interaction between pedals are most of the result. A board already wired lets you hear that in the ten minutes you actually have.

How this room works

Built to be argued with

At the volume you actually play

Marshall amplification, a deep pedalboard and modelling side by side, through the same guitar and the same speakers. Tone arguments are settled in a room at working volume or they are not settled at all.

Modelling against the real thing

TONEX and Headrush next to the amps they are modelling, switchable in seconds. Nobody has ever been argued into a tone; you either heard it in the room or you did not.

Bring your own guitar

The instrument is half the equation. A pedal that transforms one guitar can do nothing for another, which is why the room is set up for you to plug in what you already own.

Why it has to be in person

What a page cannot show you

There is nothing on this page you can trust, and that is not a failing of the writing. Recorded tone is somebody else's microphone, somebody else's room and somebody else's decision about what you should hear. Stand in front of it at volume with your own guitar and the question answers itself in about a minute.

What you leave with

  1. A decision made at volume, in a room, through your own instrument.
  2. A straight answer on modelling against amplification for the way you actually play.
  3. How the pedals interact in order, which is most of the sound.
  4. Occasionally, the discovery that the rig you already own is closer than you thought.
