Why this room exists

A microphone is never the thing being chosen

You are choosing a voice, through a preamp, into a converter, in a room.

A microphone heard in isolation tells you almost nothing useful. What tells you something is that microphone, on that particular voice, through that preamp, into that conversion, monitored on speakers that are not being kind to you. Change any one of those and the answer changes with it.

So the room is built as chains rather than as a shelf of separate boxes, and the monitoring is deliberately unflattering. Speakers that flatter are worse than speakers that are honest, because the mix gets corrected somewhere it cannot be heard and the fault ships.
