Why this room exists

Grading is a discipline, not a piece of software

Resolve is free, which solves the cheapest part of the problem.

The software costing nothing has quietly made the hard parts harder to see. A calibrated display, a room that is not fighting you, a panel under your hands and a colour-managed pipeline from camera to delivery are the actual requirements, and none of them arrive in a download.

The room is the end of the route on purpose. Material shot in the cinema room, keyed on the green set or cut in the gallery is finished here the same afternoon, and following one shot from lens to master inside a single visit is the reason the eight rooms are ordered the way they are.

A room can be arranged to demonstrate or to decide. These are the choices that make this one the second, with the alternative named rather than left out of the story.

Two displays showing the same file rarely show the same picture. Until one of them is a known quantity, every disagreement about a grade is unresolvable.

Everything above is describable and none of it is transferable. You cannot see a calibrated display through an uncalibrated one, which is the basic difficulty with reading this page at all. Ten minutes with your own footage on reference, with a panel under your hands, is the entire argument — and it is usually the visit people say changed the most.
